Hi
It%26#39;s 17 years since I visited Paphos and I barely recognise any of the descriptions/places. I am looking to book a holiday beginning of Oct for me and my husband, (we are both in our mid 40%26#39;s). Have narrowed it down to Atlantica Golden Beach, Athena Beach, Athena Royal Beach and Pioneer Beach. Can anyone offer advice ?
We normally like to walk to different places to eat each evening, so the last three seem to offer this opportunity ( although will everywhere still be open in Oct? last year we went to Crete at this time and 50% of places were closed). The Atlantica Golden Beach is trip Advisor no1 rated hotel but looks like it is in the middle of nowhere. We want a nice hotel for loafing in the day, and a convenient location for going out to eat in the evening. Cost ( within limits) is less important.
I used the Luxor forum before our visit last january and found it most useful, so a big thank you to all the people who have contributed to the Paphos forum which I visited for the first time today.

I can highly recommend The Athena Royal - read some of the reviews. It%26#39;s fabulous. I think it would suit what you are looking for.

Hi- Paphos in October is great - usually fine and warm and everywhere open- it has a much longer season than Crete. The average age of tourists rises somewhat though !
The Atlantica is a way out from town - if you dont hire a car you will have to rely on buses and taxis if you want to go out for an evening meal and wander around shops etc. On the plus side it has a lovely little beach area at the back. Heard excellent reports from Pioneer Beach also.
We were in Paphos last october and it was HOT during the day. Paphos has changed and we now stay elsewhere but always enjoy a couple of days there. All depends on what you want from a resort.

Hi,
A fellow cat-woman, from Nottm!!! (We have Se7en, known collectively as The Magnificent Se7en)
Returned Sat from Athena Royal (thru Thomson) %26amp; will be going again. It%26#39;s conveniently situated, about 20mins walk into Paphos, loadsa restaurants / bars nearby, incl Cavallini%26#39;s Italian, where the waiters are very easy on the eye %26amp; the varied menu is wonderful.
There are the chip / McDonald type places nearby, if you go looking for them; we noted where they were %26amp; avoided them.
The bus stop into Paphos is just out of the hotel, turn left %26amp; walk about 1m, nr the restaurants. It%26#39;s 80c each way %26amp; runs every 15mins. there are 3 buses, nos 10, 11, 15; the 15 goes up to Coral Bay.
We loved the hotel altho we were only B+B (never actually made breakfast!) We ate by the pool most lunchtimes, unless on a trip, %26amp; loved the freedom of being able to walk out at night.
There are local tour ops if you prefere to book thur them; we did 6 trips thru Thomson.
The grounds %26amp; grass down to the little rocky beach seem really spacious %26amp; there was never a fight for sunbeds. The age range is from 20%26#39;s upwards - it%26#39;s not like looking into God%26#39;s Waiting Room (we%26#39;re also in our 40%26#39;s).
We enjoyed the child-free aspect %26amp; no music blaring out. There is a little music when the fitness lady does her water aerobics, but it%26#39;s pretty quiet. Some floats in from a few hotels down.
The staff are lovely, especially reception (nothing%26#39;s too much trouble) %26amp; the little lass who serves drinks on the beach / pool area.
There are several places nearby where one can obtain a Cypriot sim card at £19 sterling approx. You get £3CYP free air time %26amp; if - like me, you text a lot (our lads were at home with The Magnificent Se7en) it will last almost 2 weeks. We also rang them from it. We purposely used it up (30 days validation) so we could top it up with another 5CYP, which has 365 days validation, as we plan to return within 12m. The hotel room phones are mean to be reasonable too, but we wanted the freedom to text whenever.
There are coffee / tea making facilities in the room, an iron %26amp; board (never used it!) dressing gowns %26amp; slippers, fruit, half bottle of wine, large shower gel / soap dispensers, hairdryer %26amp; 2 beach towels each which are changed daily, if you like, just by leaving them in the bathroom.
There is a gym, hairdresser, massage therapists, indoor pool %26amp; 2 outdoor. We wandered into the Athena next door; nice, but preffered ours. We also looked round some of the Riu Cypria Maris as we%26#39;ve stayed in a Riu in S. Spain. Athena was much more to our taste, on this occasion.
We did see the Atlantica (stayed in the one in Kolymbia, Rhodes - great) from the outside %26amp; yes, it is too far out for us.
Regards

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Sounds like the Athena Royal Beach is just what we want.

%26quot;%26amp; the little lass who serves drinks on the beach / pool area %26quot; Her name%26#39;s Boglaka and she%26#39;s a little treasure - makes a fabulous strawberry milkshake. You certaintly won%26#39;t be dissappointed wih the Athena Royal or Beach. The Pioneer is a little further out of Paphos.

We have been in October a few times and the weather has always been lovely in the day. The pools are a little cold though, but some hotels like the Alexander the Great in Paphos have an indoor heated pool. The evenings can be a little chilly especially if you are on the seafront and a light jacket or cardigan will be needed. Everywhere remains open ,as Paphos stays open all year unlike Agia Napa etc, we drove over there last year for a day and it was all closed up.
I think you will be quite shocked by all the developments that have popped up, as we went in the late 80%26#39;s and early 90%26#39;s before finally returning in 2002 and then buying our own apartment in 2004. No more melon fields just the Universal Estate! Mind you high quality apartments and houses.
However the people of Paphos remain warm and welcoming particularly to the English and Paphos has retained it%26#39;s charm around the harbour area. We are also in our mid 40%26#39;s and you%26#39;ll be pleased to know so far the lager louts have stayed away! Mainly people our age and families. Loads of restaurants around the harbour and in Bar Street, Grazie, Almond Tree, Chloes, etc. Have Fun!
