i am looking at flights to go to another destination and one of them is inexpensive but has a 12 hour layover (8am to 8 pm) in larnaca.
is larnaca the sort of place where such a layover could become a limited day trip into the city? i would be interested in going to see historical museums and church of lazrus, etc.. how is the public transportation to and from the airport?

I would suggest a taxi cab. Buses etc are limited. Cabs are relatively cheap and the distance to larnaca and the places you want to visit are very close to the airport
Just make you you get back on time!
