shirley valentines

Sad news. Jan and Nasser have closed Shirley Valentines and auctioned off all the kit. They will be sadly missed by many who have known them and frequented, not only Shirley Valentines but The Hut which they set up and ran for years prior to taking the lease on Rita on the Rocks. Happy retirement to you both you deserve it. North Cyprus has lost two of their stalwart devotees.

Regards Peter, Annie, Charlie and Georgie.

|||

Have they packed up altogether? I believe they still had the lease for the Hut ( we hoped they would return there and get back to the formula which was so popular and successful ). If not, best wishes for the future whatever you do, we will miss you greatly.

Peter and Lynn from Sheffield.

|||

I dont know if they still have the lease at The Hut but ever since they left it has been a failure. We went there a few times to give support to the different encumbents but it was never the same.People do not realise that a successful business, whatever it is, demands hard work, dedication and commitment to providing what the customer wants.Success is earned by effort and commitment and that is what Jan and Nasser had in abundance. Regretably Jan%26#39;s physical capability to continue to work has deteriorated over the last 2 or 3 years - although you would%26#39;nt necessarily notice due to her ability to make everybody feel special and the most important person in her presnce.

Love Peter, Annie, Charlie and Georgir

|||

Indeed, we suggested on more than one ocassion that they `delegate` and perhaps develop a Hut 2 and work less hours, with their reputation I am certain they would have enough business to thrive without being open 14 hours a day. However, Jan being a %26quot;hands on%26quot; person didn`t fancy that and staffing would have been difficult too.

We will miss them and our %26quot;Shirley table%26quot; which we occupied several times a year since 1997.

|||

Good news.The Shirley Valentines is preparing for a new face with a new name which is Silver Rocks it will open in may 2007 .we rised the quality of the restaurant with the magnificient ambience,we hope to se you there this summer ...

Damla and Ibrahim /north cyprus

|||

Welcolm Silverrocks,

Wish you all the very best and if you are sucessful there are many of us who will support you. Remember business is not easy and requires almost 24/7 commitment ,particularly in the early stages.Good luck and hope to see you up and running in May.

|||

The Hut is opening shortly with Chris %26amp; Sue the new leaseholders. They are just waiting for a few legalities to be sorted, and everything seems to take so long here, as many of us know! Many of you know Chris %26amp; Sue who will make you all feel at home!

Mosquitoes

Does anyone know if there are mosquitoes in Paphos. My sister-in-law has just come back from Larnaca and is covered in mossie bites. I don%26#39;t actually remember any from last year.

When we were there 2 years ago there were a few females at the hotel had been bitten alive(wife included).I think the common factor was walking to the harbour area for a meal which may have been a coincidence but there didn%26#39;t seem to be any problem away from that area.

|||

Yes there are mossies in Paphos in the summer months and not just confined to the harbour area, but if you take precautions they should%26#39;nt spoil your holiday. Vitamin B1 taken for 4-6 weeks before travel, combined with a good Deet spray and keeping your windows closed at night is good for keeping them at bay.

|||

In all the years I have been visiting Cyprus I have never been bitten by a mossie and believe me I am mossie bait! HOWEVER in May this year on the Larnaca side of the island they made a meal of me particularly on the legs and this was despite taking the usual precautions of Autan etc but they were unlike any mossie bite I have had in the past. In fact I started to believe they were sand flies. No swelling, just itching and the affected area turning red. Our local supermarket did a roaring trade in the little pens that you dab on when you%26#39;ve been bitten! A visit to the local pharmacy confirmed there were lots of small insects around (and this was during the day) which you can actually see but don%26#39;t hear. A most unusual situation because as I say mossies have never been a problem in the past. Spray liberally at night with Autan or Jungle Formula and cover up arms and legs, avoid wearing perfume or aftershave and you should be OK. Although medicines are not expensive in Cyprus take antihistamine tables (Piriton or similar) and some antihistamine cream with you just in case you do get bitten. Don%26#39;t be alarmed these mossies are not like the vicious type you get in the Caribbean, not as painful but annoying just the same.

|||

Hi,

I agree with the Vit B suggestion; seems to work for me. I react badly to bites - they swell, turn vibrant red, itch like nothing on earth etc but since taking Vit B, I haven%26#39;t had a problem. I didn%26#39;t realise it was possibly down to the vit B till I read about it on the Sharm TA! Here%26#39;s some more advice / tips about mozzies from that forum, a mix of my post %26amp; fellow poster, whazit:

Take Avon Skin so Soft / Woodland Fresh as it%26#39;s a great repellent. (Some specifically recommend the Avon skin so soft dry oil spray %26quot;soft %26amp; fresh%26quot;; “you want the blue/green bottle as this variety has the citronella in it, it is not in the pink one %26quot;soft %26amp; sensual%26quot;” - flysun, on Rhodes forum.)

Some say get DEET from Boots. Take a room plug in. If a real mozzie problem occurs in your room, ask reception to spray it when cleaning. You can also get wristbands from Mothercare against mozzies (approx £3 each).

(whazit) - Aspiven gadget £20 at Boots (whazit)

Hi, its what they use in the bush in Australia for insect, spider and snake bites etc, its like a suction gadget, its got various sizes of cap that you click onto what looks like a large syringe, which you then cover your bite with and push down the suction handle and it draws out the nasty stuff. I can honestly say it works!! Ours has been admired %26amp; borrowed more times than I can remember and its perfectly easy to clean as its all plastic so you just either wash it in soapy water or wipe out whichever size cap you used with an anti bacterial wipe, only thing is that you need to use it fairly quickly after the bite but as its pocket size you can just take it out with you at night in your pocket or otherwise you%26#39;d have to pick the dreaded scab off the bite and then do it, GROSSING you all out and myself YUK.......Buy one they%26#39;re great!!

Regards

|||

Have been to Cyprus many times. I always get bitten and they seem to fly past hubby to get to me. I%26#39;ve found that the cheap mossie killers and tablets you can buy in the local supermarkets really work.....of course you have got to remember to siwtch them on before you got to bed. When I have used this I get the odd bite instead of nearly 60 from my knee to my ankle the night he forgot to turn it on!!! Incidently have always stayed Coral Bay and even up in the mountains towards Peyia but never found a place where they weren%26#39;t!!!

|||

We werein Paphos a week ago and we had 6 bites between the 4 of us. we didnt use any protection sprays, plug ins or anything however my son had marmite for brekkie every day and he got 4 of those 6 bites! I covered the bites with aqueous clamine lotion it was gr8 for the bites and the sunburn and prickly heat. Have a fab holxx

|||

sorry that should read calamine lotion from the chemist in a tub

|||

Just got back Thursday, I arrived from U K with several dreadful bites, picked up from barb ques in our garden..........few bites we got in Paphos were less angry than the UK ones.......didn%26#39;t use anything, in past have used Avon Woodlands stuff, will resort to it when out gardening or sitting in garden in U K.

have a great time.........and any thing you need can be purchased in a chemist there......if you need it.

JT

|||

Hi,

Be careful about taking vitamin B1 to avoid insect bites. 1 x 50g tablet would equal 2500 times the daily recommended amount for an adult. There is no research or medical studies to back this claim up and taking a large dose of one type of vitamin can lead to a deficiency of another. If in doubt it is always best to consult your doctor first. I suffered from a bad reaction to mosquito bites in Paphos and looked into this. The conclusion was to use a DEET type spray and wear long sleeve clothing at night when possible.

Faros Hotel

I will be visiting Ayia Napa in july with my wife. we are staying Faros Hotel, to celebrate our anniversary. Can anyone tell us about the hotel?

|||

The Hotel is really great and you will not be disappointed. It has a big swimming pool and you will be able to relax there but also take nice walks to the harbour which is only a minute away. My advice -- especially since it is your anniversary -- try to book a Garden Suite. It is not very expensive especially if you try to bargain a cheaper supplement once you get there. It is worth it and my personal favorites are the ones on the Ground floor.

Food at the hotel is tasty and overall the hotel is good value for money.

|||

We stayed in the Faros a few years ago and it was great....just the right location for everything. I would say it was the best 3* (if it still is)we have been in in Ayia Napa and we have stayed in about 12 different ones!! We stayed in the 5* Alion once and wanted to be moved to the Faros!!! we are in Ayia napa in July to celebrate our 10th Anniversary!

|||

Hi, We stayed at Faros last summer, June 2006. It was a great hotel, pool was lovely. We booked a garden suite, which is definitely worth it as you can just fall out of bed to the pool and very private.

The harbour is really close by so walks around are a definite.

Staff were all really friendly. Would have gone back to Faros again this year but found a really cheap deal on a hotel just round the corner which we couldn%26#39;t turn down.

Best location in cyprus?

We are looking to go to Cyprus in late July/August for 1 week/ten days. We are looking for a relaxing break witj diving for my husband and fabulous beach and possible spa for me.

Travel agents are recommending Elysium Hotel in Paphos but from reading through the forum I%26#39;m not even sure if this is the place for us. As we are going to Dubai in Oct we are looking for a relaxing four/five star get away? Any ideas?

|||

you could always carry on from dubai to maldives. excellent diving there. Cyprus, not so good for diving. if you want a beach then head for nissi bay or protaras. not reallly fabulous beach at paphos.

Banks, Ayia Napa

Hi all,

Can anyone answer me a question! Going to Napa in 2 weeks having been there before twice. Can anyone tell me if there is a Bank with ATM near the Nissi Beach Holiday Resort? I%26#39;ve only ever stayed the other side of the square and not too familiar with the Nissi beach end.

Thanks for any answers received.

12-26 August - Anyone else?!

Hi, I%26#39;ve booked to go to Ayia Napa with my sis from 12-26th August, staying at the Anthea apartments. Last year was my first time there (stayed early October for a week) but stayed at the Macronnisos Village next to the Water Park. I just wondered if anyone knows how close the Anthea Apartments are to the main square.

Also apart from Clarabels (which was gorgeous), are there any other reasonably priced restaurants nearby?

Thanks

Alison

|||

Hello Alison, my cousin and myself are also staying at the Anthea apartments, Aug 22nd-5th sept. It is only a 2 min walk into the square, so not far to stagger home!!!

Club Atlantica Sun Garden

Hi

I am staying at Club Atlanica Sun Garden in Ayia Napa in July. There is 11 of us staying, has anyone been there if so what is it like.

thanks

|||

Hey hey... i tried to submit a post before this but i dont know whether it was posted. However, just wana let you know i went to sun gardens last year and i had a fantastic time! I went on a family holiday however i was with my older sister so we went clubbin almost every night! Its in the perfect place really, its great in the day as there isnt much noise and then at night its only a ten minute walk from the amazin night life in ayia napa! Taxis dont cost much either. The actualy hotel in itself its kept really clean and all the reps and bar staff are really friendly and make you feel welcome. You have the choices of two pools and the beach isnt far either. Im actually looking to go back there with my friends this year, also in july, however i havent found a good deal there yet. Hope you have a fantastic time, im sure you will xx

|||

hi there we stayed there last year and are going back this year, the hotel is in a great setting looking onto the sea ,the veiws are brill and only about 100m to the main beach, the food is good but there are some very good places to eat if you get fed up with it. there are lots of germans about 50/50 split but they didnt bother us they do have there own enertainment team but its naff ,we did have an english speaking led by a guy called Nick (high ho ) who put on entertainment day and night most of which you can take part in , hope most of them are back this year as we had a good laugh ,but the water polo gets a bit heated as the germans always take part, the staff are great the rooms are good with air con ,if you have a sea veiw room you will love the view, its in a very quiet area but only a short 10 min walk to the town centre , we arrive on sun the 8th so if your there then we might see you all , if you want to know anymore just let me know if i can help .

i think you will enjoy it we loved it

jim

|||

My boyfriend and i stayed at the hotel last year between 9th july and 16th july! We LOVED every sigle min of the holiday! The cocktails were lovely, VERY friendly staff, book in for an Al Catre meal if your all inclusive its not to be missed! The service your self buffet is always different, lovely inside and outside seating areas to eat!

We never used to the lower pool, we always used the pool at the top of the hotel as our apartment was there! Our room was brilliant, just ashame about the ants, soon got onto the cleaners and they were gone!

Views are lovely too, really peaceful area of Ayia Nappa with about a 10 to 15min walk into the hustle and bustle of the town! There is also a bus at the top of the road, we didn%26#39;t use this but i understand its very cheap.

We went on a trip which was - watching the sun set over Famagusta...this was one of the highlights for us, the boat was laid on with loads of food, and drink, on board entertainment, not very many people! You can swim on certain stops, and try cannoing!

Were going to Turkey this year as we couldn%26#39;t get a cheap deal with this hotel like last year...will hopefully reruen one day!

Remember you may need some good footwear for the hilly areas around the hotel!

we have been invited to a wedding in larnaca in august.I am a single parent with three boys.I am aware it will bw very hot but about the only place i can afford is somewhere caleed the sea and lake view aprtments. wou;ld i be better off staying somwhere else for the week and just coming in to larnaca for wedding on the saturday? If so where would anybody recommend. ps i wont want tto be going clubbing so somewhere quiet would be nice!!

|||

Are you prepared to hire a car. If so i would suggest the So Nice appartments near Macronissos, on the way to Ayia Napa. These are good value for Ayia Napa area. A long way from centre. At least 45 mins walk so they%26#39;re nice and qiet. Also on a good beach.Don%26#39;t know how they compare with Larnaca price-wise. Plus you have the travelling. Could do a taxi though. Its only 20 mins away by car.

|||

cheers i am now considering not going package at all!!!

hi,does anyone know if there are any boat trips or anything like that in paphos? how much etc? thanks xxxx

|||

Take a look at this site.

www.water-activities.com

Although I haven%26#39;t been on one of their trips (yet) different sets friends of mine who have both highly recommed it.

|||

just had a look, thanks will defo be booking a day out!! xx

|||

i would recomend the over night cruise from limasol to egypt if your time and finances allow this. it might seem expensive but it is a chance to see the sights of Cairo. when we honeymooned in cyprus the trip made the holiday.

Further to your other question regarding night life - aviod bar street like the the local water. Watch your pockets and your change.

enjoy your hols.

What music do the nightclubs tend to play in Ayia Napa?

My friends and I are thinking of going to Ayia Napa this summer and just wanted a bit of info on the clubs.

Are there many clubs that just play cheese and pop? I%26#39;m not a big R%26amp;B or garage fan (like alternative and indie music really) but can cope with cheese for two weeks.

I have heard that it%26#39;s all dance and garage though, is that right?

Thanks for any advice!

|||

ayia napa has evrything u want. garage,cheese,R%26amp;B,house,disco,pop,etc....anything and everything.

the choice is yours!!!! tom

|||

Well i have been twice, and each time all the music sounded the same wherever you went! Boring commercial crap, r%26amp;b and always chart shite... but its such a cool atmosphere ill be going back!

|||

I also thought that it was all garage and RnB but I am meeting up with a member here who told me that a new club is opening and it has some large trance/house DJ%26#39;s

I am thrilled to hear that my favourate DJ Judge Jules is playing there on 26th June.

YorshireBonzer found this website http://playnightclub.bookmethatnight.com and they look to have a great variety of music not just Garage.

Only 2 weeks until I get there I cant wait!

|||

Im going this Sunday!! And going back out in August! Will miss the judge though.. sure he will be wicked... but i am pleased to hear there could be some decent music out there this year! Hope you have a good one matey...

|||

Ive just got back from Ayia Napa and there is a Rock Garden bar so hopefully you%26#39;ll like that, i got a %26#39;Rage against the machine%26#39; cocktail and it tasted like pure ouzo lol

Most of the places that i went in2 had all the up2 date dancey music goin on esp titanic, i liked it there tho i was was quite gon by that point lol

Wen im very drunk i dont even hear music anyway :P

Kayleigh x

|||

hehe, yes i just got back 2 days ago... :( was wicked there, spent alot of time in the Bulldog, great staff and sirloin steak in there!

Must say the music seemed alot less cheesier than the last 2 years i have been... Rock Garden, was that just down from Aruba?

Carwash was ace, did Starskys too, but that was just too rammed...

Got pulled by the police for no helmet, but he let me off cos i had no paper work on me... so do not carry anything as far as id goes... lol

Hi!!! These are nice apartments, stayed there a few years ago. They are on the outskirts of town, but it will only take you a few mins to walk to the pubs etc. Plus, its in the right location for the beach, just down the road. Enjoy.

Thanks!! Haven%26#39;t heard a bad report about them yet so it%26#39;s looking good.

Dress code

Does any one know if the Kouzalis Hotel Paralimni has a dress code for the evening meal .

Regards

|||

I cant imagine any hotel in Protaras be it, 3 4 or 5 star having a dress code.....

But I would suspect that you probably wont be allowed in in beachwear..ie....shorts, t,shirts, sarongs etc.....

But if you want to be sure, visit www.holidayuncovered.com

It had very good reviews of every hotel in CYprus

|||

yes the hotel does have a dress code for dinner in the evening. my boyf was caught out last year he went to dinner in shorts and was sent to change.

if its your first time at the kouzalis im sure youll have a great time. we are flying out tomorrow for our second trip and cannot wait. the hotel is lovely. its quite quiet but close enough to restaurants, shops etc and a short taxi to protaras.

the facilities are pretty good, small gym, indoor pool, sauna, massage etc.

the eveing entertainment is pretty poor really but the bar upstairs is perfect for a drink and a chat looking over the sea in the evening and if you want something busier. pernera and protaras are not too far. Personally i would recommend a few excursions, they really made our hol last year.

places to eat in protaras?

Our family (two adults, one teenager) will be staying at the Andreotis Apts, Protaras, in July 2007. Can anyone advise on nice places to eat (child a bit fussy but we don%26#39;t want McD%26#39;s!) and also things to do without paying the exhorbitant costs of tours with the company? Appreciate any help!

|||

There are so many places to eat in Protaras itself it would be difficult to list them all. One of them which stands out is Oscars - very good (opposite McDs). The Andreotis also has a very good reputation for food itself. There is also a wonderful Japanese and Chinese restaurant in Protaras. Rocks on the main strip going out towards Pernera also has a good reputation as doing one of the best kleftikos. You can walk into Pernera at night (only 10 minutes) and there are lots of good restaurants there - La Cultura De Gusto is possibly the best food I have eaten (predominantly Italian %26amp; Meditteranean) and is used by Cypriots which is a good sign. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. The Jolly Waiter and Blue Bay restaurants in Pernera are typically cypriot and in high season usually have a Cypriot dancing night which is good fun. Go to any of the travel companies dotted around Protaras instead of booking through your rep. One very good trip is the jeep safari trip to the Troodos mountains - 4 x 4 off road (I think your teenager would love this). Have to warn you it is a bit uncomfortable on your nether regions as basically between 8 and 10 of you travel in a landrover on hard wooden seats! Costs approx 25Cyp for a full day which includes an excellent meze lunch and stops at litle villages and monasteries. It is a tiring trip but very well worth doing. There are numerous boat trips which you can book direct near Fig Tree Bay - again cheaper than the tour operators. The large coca cola boats you will see take you up to Famagusta (although you cannot get off the boat there) and then back down to Cape Greko for swimming %26amp; snorkelling. Water park in Protaras and Ayia Napa - you can get the local bus to Ayia Napa and this which will cost you about 90c each way. Buses are a very cheap way of travelling. I would give the Sunday market at Larnaca a miss - the market is just cheap imitation tat and not indictative of Cypriot quality goods. A trip to Nicosia - it will be very hot and the temperatures in Nicosia are always much hotter than the coast. Fascinating city to see though and you can either go by organised tour (which I would recommend) or local bus which takes about 1 1/2 hours and isn%26#39;t particularly comfortable as the buses are not air conditioned. The Famagusta view point is very interesting - you would however need to have a hire car for this or take a taxi but it gives you an eye opening insight into the north/south divide of the island.

Hope you have a lovely time as I%26#39;m sure you will.

|||

Thank you so much for all the very useful information! It will be our first time in Cyprus and we are really looking forward to it. We are thinking of hiring a car so we could possibly do some of the trips that way. The jeep safari sounds great and we will certainly enjoy trying out the restaurants you recommend.

|||

Hiring a car is ideal - it is very easy to drive in Cyprus - same side of the roads as the UK and it is very easy to find your way around. Keep to the speed limits though - they are very %26quot;hot%26quot; on speeding tourists!

|||

Thanks Kath - we will be careful!! Further to the fact we will be staying self catering at the Andreotis, is there anything you would advise us to bring with us or are apartments generally up to speed for cooking etc?

|||

Most apartments offer quite basic supplies of utensils which are generally sufficient for breakfast or sandwiches at lunchtime but I wouldn%26#39;t even think about preparing anything more than that although I do know people who do! (I actually know someone who prepared a Sunday lunch including Bisto gravy!!!!) The weather will be very hot when you are there and you don%26#39;t want to spend any more time in the kitchen than necessary. Also you may well find you don%26#39;t actually want to eat that much because of the heat. However you will usually have either a cooker or microwave, kettle, fridge, cutlery and a couple of pans, cups %26amp; plates. Suprisingly I have never yet had a toaster in an apartment which would be quite a plus. The couple who run the catering and bar side at the Andreotis have an excellent reputation - indeed they used to be based at the apartments I stay at and many people still go to the Andreotis just for the food so you should be OK. Hope you have a wonderful holiday and let us have a report when you get back. If you need any more info on Cyprus please let me know

|||

hi

for car rentals try www.economycarrentals.com we will be collecting are C1 class car around 10pm tonight and heading back to Protaras for two wks, cost me £237 for the two weeks.

as to eating out there are loads of places, i,ll be going back to oscars for definate, just accross from McD, we were in protaras last sept eat out every night, every meal was good.

time for case,s in car.

|||

Thanks for the advice on car hire. Did you book it yourself online or through a travel agent? We might book just for a couple of days - are there some which are more competitive for that length of time? Anyway - have a brilliant time and report back when you come home!!

|||

Just got back from Andreotis yesterday. Had a fab two week holiday, four adults and ten year old boy. Ate breakfast at Andreotis most mornings, yummy and very good value. Best restaurant by far is Diva, also look out for Erato half way down the strip. Nicolas is lovely too. Had a good meal at Romeos followed by a bad one so not sure there. Tried The Corner, expensive and not as nice as Diva opposite.

|||

I think it is very difficult to recommend a good restaurant as what one likes another doesn%26#39;t so much. I%26#39;m vegetarian and not fussy - my husband is not veggie and extremely fussy. We%26#39;ve been to Protaras so many time and find our favourites are the Corner restaurant - great food and service. The mexican up past Mac Donalds and on our last visit we found a superb one - unfortunately I can%26#39;t remember the name but it is attached to the Sandra Apts about half way up the strip - it used to be a fish restaurant and go tclosed down and it%26#39;s now owned by an English couple. Not cypriot food but excellent if you want something easy and cheap. Another great place is the Pizza Place across from the Iliada - it looks rubbish but it is honestly excellent. It has an eat as much as you like buffet and although it does Pizza isn%26#39;t really a Pizza Hut!! Try it - you won%26#39;t be disappointed. I wasn%26#39;t very well last year when we were there with a stomach ulcer and we eat there a lot as the food was cheap. good and %26quot;safe%26quot;!!

Best thing about Cyprus is the food - enjoy!!

|||

Most of our favourite places to eat are at the Pernera end of Protaras , and can be reached by bus or car. We like the Cordon Blue, The Steak and Ale House, La Cultura del Gusto and the Blue Bay Taverna. My elder daughter was very keen on Diva and Rocks in Protaras and we all liked the mexican in Ayia Napa called Los Bandidos.

Paralimni is a nice little town and can be reached by local bus. Makes a nice morning looking around at the shops and then chilling out at one of the cafes in the square before catching the bus back.

Also by bus you can go to Ayia Napa and have a walk round the harbour or the old Venetian monastery, which is particularly nice in the evening, and seems at odds with the surrounding bars.

Early evening you could walk up the steps to the little church Profitis Elias, between Protaras and Pernera, you get a lovely view up there.

If you hire a car there are, of course ,loads of places you can go further afield, these are just a few things you could do locally without one.

brides that got married at aeneas hotel

Hi just wondering what its like? how did your day go??

Did any1 get married here?

Thanks

|||

Hi

I got married at this hotel on May 23rd and had an absolutely fantastic time!!

We had emailed all the hotels in Ayia Napa and Protaras asking them to email us pictures of the wedding venues etc and we decided on the Aeneas. Have you emailed the hotel and asked them to send you pics? If not I still have the original email and can forward it on to you.

We didn%26#39;t actually go and see the hotel %26quot;in the flesh%26quot; until we arrived the week before the wedding. We went along and spoke to Thassos (really nice man, very helpful and great sense of humour!). He showed us where everything was, went through all our options, asked us what we wanted etc. At first I was a bit apprehensive as the pool looks quite near where the ceremony is held but really it isn%26#39;t at all. Also you think it’s going to be unbearably hot but it isn’t, it’s really nice and cool where the marquee is.

We decided to go for the ceremony outside, the meal outside in the marquee, the party with DJ outside, we ordered our own cake from a local bakers and arranged our own dvd person and photographer (did this before we went anyway). So we had the hotel from 2:30pm until 12:00am

We had our ceremony outside on the grounds of the hotel at 2:30pm. It’s set up really beautifully it’s like something you see from an American movie. We then had pictures taken and had dinner. You can really mix and match or decide on your own menu. The meal was delicious. We laughed because the starter looked a bit novelle cuisine so our guests were a bit panicky thinking that the entire meal would be like that but you get loads of soup and for your main meal then you get your pudding and then coffee tea and more cakes!! We were stuffed.

Then hubby and I went for more pics and came back to cut the cake, have the 1st dance and party!!

Have you booked the hotels DJ? If so you will love him, he is fantastic and made it a brilliant night. You get a form to complete prior to the wedding to pick your first dance, ceremony entrance music, music for dinner, type of music you want played throughout the night and specific requests. At the end the DJ got us to do Zorba and then got all our guests to form a circle and come in one at a time to thank us for inviting them to our wedding but they were to do it in their best dance moves………..what a laugh!

If you want to ask anything else just let me know….don’t panic you will love every minute it’s fantastic!!

nightlife in paphos

is there any entertainment shows,comedians,singers nightclubs,etc in paphos or surrounding area?

me and my fiance are goin for a week in july to pafian sun village and i have read a few bad reviews about it esp the entertainment on site at night!

xxx

|||

Their are plenty of bars and nightclubs on Bar Street and dotted all around, as well as the bars etc on Tomb of the Kings Road

Flannagans on Bars Street offers Elton John and Elvis tributes as well as other local entertainment. There is also the 10 pin bowling just above Flannagans

Demokritos and Ailkon (check the spelling of that one) both offer traditional Greek entertainment during your meal.

There is a show advertised in Chlorakas called Strictly Spectacular, this sis a variety type show and is on every Monday evening, apparently your 1st drink is included in the admission cost. Flyers for this show can be picked up from most road side advertising hoardings.

|||

Hi Hayley,

If you are staying in Pafian Sun Village then you could go to Coral Bay as well as Paphos as it is fairly close to Coral Bay.

You can catch the bus there and a taxi back as the last bus will be appx. 11pm.

You can get a nice meal in Coral Bay and even though it is not buzzing with nightlife there are a few cocktail bars and even a couple of nightclubs. I have never been to a nightclub there though but my sister in law and her boyfriend enjoyed a night out there.

Bar Street in Paphos is the street to go to for nightlife but it doesn%26#39;t get busy till appx. 11pm or even later!

I have heard good reports about the Pafian Sun Village.

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have a good time!

elysium hotel/paphos

has anybody stayed at the eluysium hotel this year, because we have been told that there are building works going on very near? we have booked 2 weeks in july and was wondering if there are any rooms in the hotel which we should try and avoid, i.e. re noise etc, kitchen smells. This holiday is going to be special because i have just had 2 major operations and am recovering, and this hotel looks perfect, but.... Also what is there to do and see around the area, or any pitfalls.

|||

Hello, I have also booked to stay at the Elysium in July for my honeymoon.

The hotel looks really lovely and I can not wait to go there. I am also interested to hear if there are any building works going on.

We have booked a car for 3 days as I know people who have been and they say to definately go to the Troudos mountains.

Katy

|||

I got married and stayed at the Elysium last year and had the same concerns as I heard there was building work but it was just a couple of villas next to the hotel being built and we didnt hear anything or have any concerns. The hotel is absolutely fantastic and it sounds just like the tonic you need. I had my wedding there with 50 guests who all commented they had never seen anything as fantastic and luxurious before. I have just returned home from my first anniversary and the villas are still being built so work is very slow and its just men working by hand, no machinery or any noise but im sure if you get there and you have any concerns the hotel will be more than happy to assist you as they are very helpful. The buses are fantastic and only 80 cents no matter where you go. Coral Bay is a good place to visit and the Troodos Mountains but i didnt do much else but relax and sunbathe. At the hotel they come around the pool with cold face towels to cool you down and there is a man bringing ice creams on a bike. I hope you have a fantastic holiday and a speedy recovery.

Pathos day trip

Can anyone tell me if there are tours to Pathos from Limassol port I am going on a cruise have been to Aiya Napa ,Protaris before would like to see Pathos tour costs £36.00 for 5hours (2hours probably travelling )is it worth doing?

|||

There may be a bus service between Paphos and Limassol, the drive time (by car at any rate) is about 45 mins.

In relation to your cruise are you starting from Limassol or is that one of the ports you call into?

Despite owning an apartment in Paphos, my wife wants to go cruising next year to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I personally don%26#39;t fancy cruising, always thought it would be like being in jail with a chance of being drowned!

I did think of going to Paphos and then maybe doing a cruise from Limassol, but don%26#39;t fancy calling into Syria, Jordan, Israel and Iran, for obvious reasons.

St George Hotel, Paphos

My girlfriend and I have just booked a late deal to Cyprus staying at the St George Hotel on half board.

Just wondered if anyones been to this hotel and also if there is much nightlife in the local streets or if not how much a taxi/bus is to main bars etc in Paphos.

If anyone has got any other tips on things to do, places to eat and drink etc for two 21 year olds I%26#39;ll be grateful as its our first time visiting Cyprus

cheers

|||

There are a few bars near the St George but not a lot of night-life. The bus iEntertainment is laid on in the hotel and is a fair standard but not top-notch. A very nice hotel, pushing opulent. 4%26quot; thick mattresses on the sun loungers down on the beach. Good bar service and that%26#39;s all I can say about the place. I didn%26#39;t stay there but visited one evening from the Akteon, just up the road. Enjoy.

|||

I don%26#39;t know what happened to the text, but a bus is 80 cents and a taxi about £5.

|||

Thanks for that- I%26#39;ll look forward to it! cheers

|||

Hi TractorBoy.

You haven%26#39;t had many replies, and I wasn%26#39;t going to stick my oar in, as it%26#39;s about 8 years since we stayed at the St George, and I thought you%26#39;d get some more up to date reports. We stayed there when we got married, and couldn%26#39;t fault it.

Having said that - I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s changed much in the last few years, and if it hasn%26#39;t, it%26#39;s a lovely hotel, and you%26#39;ll have a lovely time. It%26#39;s a bit of a way out of Paphos, but, as someone else has said, there are enough bars in the vicinity, and the bus service was very good from what I remember.

Have a great time - I%26#39;m sure you enjoy Cyprus and want to go back.

|||

Hi tractor boy i have just booked a late deal arriving 26th june as well, never been to cyprus before but the deal was to good to be true. I have since met a friend whose daughter got married at the st george last year and they said the hotel and food was excellent and the only problem they had was the lack of nightlife around the hotel.given i have paid £600 less than them i may be able to afford a taxi to paphos each night , i cannot understand why the discounts are so high for a hotel of this standard?? ANY IDEAS

Don%26#39;t be suspicious of good discounts to this hotel - it most certainly doesn%26#39;t mean it%26#39;s a cheap hotel!

I%26#39;ve been going to Paphos for 20 years, and whilst I loved the St George (we%26#39;ve stayed there about 5 times), the location is not as handy for the shops/harbour as the hotel where I now go. That%26#39;s probably the reason for the good deal. Having said that, the location is lovely - and it%26#39;s just as easy to get up to Coral Bay on the bus (which is where you%26#39;ll get the lovely beach, and more shops and restaurants - it%26#39;s a little resort, all on it%26#39;s own!).

You won%26#39;t be disappointed.

|||

Never actually stayed in the St George but did visit it about 4/5 years ago when by brother -in-law got married, I thought it was excellent in every department from rooms to pool/beach area to the wedding meal provided.

However, on a visit to Paphos in January I met with an ex work colleague who had booked to stay at the St George, I told him of my experience of the hotel, limited as it was, however when we met again at the airport he said that he had been a little disappointed and described the hotel as being %26quot;a little tierd%26quot; and in need of an upgrade. He also said that the food had left a little to be desired and that the entertainment was very limited although conceded that it may have been because it was the %26quot;off season%26quot;

The distance to town also disappointed him as at that time of year the buses stop running around 5/6 pm, they do however run to around 11pm during high season.

In terms of things to do a trip on the Wavedancer from Paphos harbour has been highly recommened to me twice over the past couple of weeks.

I went on the WaveDancer last year - it is indeed a nice boat trip. There are sunbeds and tables all over the top part of the boat, so you can sunbathe as you sail! The only thing was - they got snatched up very quickly, so you need to get on the boat as soon as you can.

Hi,

Within minutes either way they%26#39;ll be spoilt for choice restaurant wise.

If they turn right at the hotel entrance and walk along the main road, taking the second turning on the right (before the Yemen) theres a really good selection of restaurants from traditional %26#39;Michaels%26#39;, really good indian and a super South African steak house %26#39;Zambezi%26#39;. If they fancy cheap and cheerfull theres always the Friendship Bar (1st turning on right) where you can also watch sports or the Yemen just after 2nd turning.

Believe me they won%26#39;t be short of restaurants and because the competition is so strong you rarely get a bad meal.

However in my experience both restaurants in the centre of the shopping precinct just after the Yemen aren%26#39;t very good. The little bakery (wooden chairs) does lovely sandwiches, cakes and coffee.

The bars are a little further along, just before the gardens on the right, turn right and walk to the left. %26#39;Bar Street%26#39; believe me its lively. I%26#39;d recommend only taking smallish notes, my son often has to question his change.

Good restaurants to the left of the hotel and a few quieter bars with big screens and nice food. Irish bar in the area is alway busy.

|||

hi jamie and suzanne are you back from cyprus yet? we are eagerly awaiting your report on the aloe hotel and paphos hope you had a good time hurry with your report

|||

For anyone staying at The Aloe - there%26#39;s a great little bar within stumbling distance. Come out of the hotel, turn right and take the first little road on the right - Thalias St. Just up on the left is The Friendship Bar - particularly good if you like Sports on telly. Ari, the bar-owner is just great, and everyone that goes in there always get talking to each other! A really nice atmosphere. It%26#39;s a bit hidden away if you don%26#39;t know it%26#39;s there, but great if you%26#39;re staying at the Aloe.

were to hold reception in protaras/restaurant advice

Hello,

im hoping somebody could provide me with some advice on where would be best to hold a wedding reception in protaras.

i am getting married in the sunrise beach hotel next year ,and am having difficulty deciding as i have never been there.

Even some restaurant ratings would be good as this could help me decide.

many thanks

colin.

|||

Hey, Colin, help us out a bit... what kind of place you looking for? Traditional Cypriot? Cheap? Classy? How many people? Many kids?

And search this forum... there%26#39;s been quite a few recent posts on this subject.

|||

Hi Angela,

im looking for something averagly priced , to cater for around 19 adults and one child.

Some thing a bit special would be good and i would not mind paying a little extra for it.

Cheers for your reply,

Colin.

|||

Hi there just returned from cyprus today and read your post. aian Protaras theres a nice restaurant called %26quot;Oscars%26quot; who hold wedding receptions, which is nice, food is good here too.Also just outside protaras is a lovely restaurant called Blue Spice its just across from the Anastasia hotel. Hope this helps, have a great day.

I got married on August 3rd 2006 at paralimni town hall booked a restaurant the day before the wedding at yianna marie it was absolutely stunning. Leon the owner was fantastic we had 21 guests including children. Our menu consisted of 10 extremely stunning dishes each. salad, fresh cream and garlic mushrooms, potatoes, fillet steak, chicken breast in sauce, fresh salmon pasta we got to about 7-8 dishes and had to ask them to stop bringing anymore out as we were all so full lots of different types of mezes available. We were overlooking the sea watching boats etc glide past. We were under a canopy it was set out beautifully cake on seperate table with champagne in bucket and flowers. Big fan on us as well because it was about45 degrees. Free childrens meals and shots. It was like eating at a michelin star restaurant but 10 times better. And after drinking our way through 10 bottles of champagne and lots of beer,lager, shorts, coke etc it came to a massive 500 pounds. Unbelievable scenery, setting, food and outstanding service.

Hi, we got married at Ayia Napa Town Hall on 24 April this year and had our wedding reception at Yianna Marie restaurant. The day was absolutely stunning and the reception was perfect. Leo, the restaurant manager couldn%26#39;t have been more helpful. We went to see him a couple of days before the wedding and went through all our requirements. There were loads of sample menus to choose from including Greek Mezes through to English/Continental menus. Kids just choose from kids menu. We decided that we would like our guests to have a choice of meals over 4 courses and Leo had the menus printed up ready for the big day. We were also able to arrange balloons and flowers for decoration, champagne etc through him and our wedding Co-ordinator (Thomas Cook) arranged for the cake to be delivered there. We could either sit outside or inside depending on the weather but Leo left it until the day to decide. As it happened, there was a bit of wind so we sat inside which was lovely and also very private. The service was fabulous and it felt like a real wedding event and not at all like we had just plumped for any old restaurant for a meal. the place looked beaultiful with the balloons we had chosen. The only downside was that we had to pay for hire of white table cloths, which although not at all expensive (£1 each or something) just surprised us that they didn%26#39;t have a stock as they do quite a lot of weddings.

We had a party of 25 in total (17 adults and 8 children) of all ages including a family of vegetarians and all were well catered for. In addition to all of the wonderful food, we had 3 bottles of Moet Chandon for toasting, 10 bottles of house wine (white and red) which I have to say was very nice, drinks for kids, loads of beer and spirits over 5 hours. For the whole lot, food, drink, balloons and Tablecloths the bill came to CYP£620 which we thought was a bargain.

The setting was gorgeous as you look out over a grassy hill leading to the golden beach with the blue med beyond. When we first arrived after the wedding ceremony and photographs, all of the guests were already there and we were introduced and then taken onto the lawn to cut our wedding cake and glasses of Champagne. it was perfect and if i could do it again, i wouldn%26#39;t change a thing.

P.S. Don%26#39;t know whether you%26#39;ve had your wedding yet but if not, try and arrange to have your photographs taken at Ayia Napa monastry, it%26#39;s a beatiful honey coloured stone place and our photos are stunning.

good Luck

Paphos Apartment Reccommendation

Hi, My boyfriend and i are coming to Paphos for a wedding 29th aug-5th sept. Can anyone recommend a nice, clean complex with nice aparments? We%26#39;ve trawled the internet and have seen so many places, but would love to have one recommended to me if possible!

Thanks, Lucy

|||

We stayed at the Kefalos Village apartments, last year , and can recommend them, especially the apartments with sea view.

They are near the Tomb of the Kings Road , but far enough away to avoid the noise of the busy road and are quite central to everything.

If you read the reviews, they will give you a good idea what to expect.

One important thing to make sure of, wherever you book, make sure you have air conditioning, as the temperature is usually very hot when you will be there. We were there at that time last year and it was in the 40%26#39;s, I thought I was going to melt, but the air conditioned apartment was a godsend, I never wanted to leave it !!!

|||

Hi, thanks so much for this, i%26#39;ll have a look into this. Totally take on your point about the acon. We came for a wedding a few years ago in May and it was sweltering then too - shame it isn%26#39;t etiquette to wear swimmers at a wedding!! Cheers, LSP

Do I need a Visa for the Day Trip to Egypt?

I have a UK Passport, but will I need an additional Visa, for a day trip to Egypt?

|||

No, your passport is sufficient, well it was last year when we went on the mini cruise.

|||

Not sure about a day trip but when I go to Egypt I have to buy my visa on arrival at the airport. Cost may be included in the cost of your trip if it is an organised one.

|||

No visa required, we flew there for the day trip last year, the day is very well structured and you are looked after very well.

Limassol to Pathos

Could anyone tell me the distance from %26#39;Four Seasons%26#39; Limassol to Pathos. Evenings sound dire in Limassol - stripclubs etc. Better to go by Bus or Taxi. Costs? Want to do some site seeing, shopping eating out etc. booked for September also average temp for this time of year? No not been before.

|||

Hi there

Your right there are strip clubs, but limassol has some excellent restaurants to eat out in and a tourist area with a selection of bars and night clubs, the old town of limassol is a more classy area for a night out and is where youwill find all the locals head to. also shoppings is by far better in the old town of limassol and much cheaper.

taxi to paphos will cost 35 before midnight more after.

let me know if you need more info

cyprus eve

|||

|||

This link might help baby. When are you going? We%26#39;re staying there from 4 September for 9 nights...

small wedding reception paphos with kids

Hi please help we are getting married in paphos aug 08 and are looking for somewhere for a small wedding reception of about 18 people with about half of that being kids, so does anybody know anywhere for a nice reception that caters for kids many thanks pah73.

|||

Hi - I know what you mean about catering for kids, but they will be very welcome in any of the restaurants in Paphos. Have you had a look at the wedding thread on the Cyprus forum of HolidayTruths for any recommendations? Might be worth a go, if not, let us all know whereabouts you%26#39;re staying in Paphos and I%26#39;m sure someone will come along with recommendations for you.

Hi we have just returned from cyprus where we had a wonderful reception in Daphne Restaurant by the Harbour . If you would like some details prices contacts etc, please e-mail me amandahatfield80@hotmail.com

|||

Hello

We have just returned from a week in Cyprus. We were having a meal at the Aurion Restaurant on Poseidonas Ave and a couple were having their wedding reception there (about 30 guests). The setting of the restaurant was very nice (courtyard setting - tables under trees - water feature) and it felf very intimate. PS the courtyard is surrounded by shops but did still feel intimate.

Were is best to go

Hi all,

me and my friends are looking to go to cyprus in september

and wanted to no where is the ebst place we dont want the roundyness of aya napai but would like a resort which has good night life lots of shops and resturants but not to loud like aya napa

also what is the temp out there in september

|||

I am assuming that you are planning the South of the Island and not the North as you refer to Ayia Napa. Split between the Western and Eastern resorts, the East has nice sandy beaches. Lots of shopping and nightlife I would suggest Limassol in the middle. However, there isn%26#39;t a sandy beach there. Far East of the island, Protaras is supposedly not as noisy as Ayia Napa and has nice sandy beaches as does Pernera. I would not say that it has fantastic shopping.. However, I have been to Protaras and found it nosier on occassion than Ayia Napa. Have you ever been to Ayia Napa? Do not believe what the papers say would be my opinion. Although, I would recommend that you stay in the Nissi Bay area. This is 20 mins walk from the centre, is quiet and has nice beaches, bars, shops and restaurants. In September it is getting quieter as the schools and colleges resume back here in the UK. Paphos is good for sightseeing and has nightlife, but again it does not have the nice sandy beaches that are prevalent on the East. Hope this helps.

|||

Pernera on the south east of the island is a nice place to stay - lovely beaches and good restaurants. Depends on what type of shops you are looking for - most in Protaras %26amp; Pernera are typical tourists shops - bit tacky and nothing exciting. There are some lovely little shops in Paralimni which is a 20 minute drive from Pernera but if you want serious shopping then you are going to have to make a trip to Nicosia. Pafos has more shops but beaches not very good. Don%26#39;t write off Ayia Napa. Its not as you are led to believe. The party people come out at night to enjoy their hols but its not rowdy in the day. In September the season is starting to wind down and it is much quieter anyway on the south eastern side of the island. Weather in September is lovely - still hot but not sticky humid like July/August.

5 Irish Lads (25/26) headin to Napa July 7th-14th

Hi! 5 Irish guys (25/26 yrs old) headin over Sat July 7th to get away from the humdrum of working life for a week. Lookin to relax and chill by day at the beach and more importantly well up for a laugh and partying by night.

Haven%26#39;t actually booked it yet so any advice on which apartments are the best? Prob booking with Budget Travel so the options are:

Carina Apts

Aphelandra Apts

Green Bungalows

Macronnis Village

Faros Hotel

Atlantica Sancta Napa

Any ideas which to go with? Wont be spendin much time in the rooms anyway but could do with AC %26amp; maybe a decent poolside/hotel bar for some %26quot;warm-up%26quot; drinks in the evening. Also would be ideal to be in a place that is more geared towards younger people in their 20s/30s up for a laugh as opposed to older families etc (no offence).

Thats it! Oh if you will be over there that week drop me a line. We are all up for a laugh, 4 of the 5 single (mostly broken up from the birds of late), and seriously hot though beauty is in the eye of the beholder bla bla...

Anyway if you have any ideas for where to stay, and also if your over that week sure post an %26#39;ol reply.

Nice one.

|||

hey we will be there too. drop me an email... joanne_jarvis@hotmail.com

|||

Carina too far out for you, macronissos definitely are. Left with the rest I would say on cost that I would opt for Green Bungalows.

Just Got Married In Paphos!

Hello everyone!

We have just returned from getting married in Paphos. We were out there a total of 14 days and every single day the weather was clear blue skies with hot sunshine in the 90%26#39;s!!!!

We booked a wedding package through Thomas Cook last year. From start to finish they have been fantastic, and couldn%26#39;t do enough for us to make sure we had a memorable trip.

We flew from Manchester with Thomas Cook Airlines with no problems. They even gave us the extra leg room seats as a treat as we were going away to get married which was very kind of them.

We stayed in the Laura Beach Hotel just outside Paphos which was great, a very nice hotel, but not a UK 4* hotel, more 3*. It served us well, everywhere was clean in the hotel and rooms. The service was excellent, and were constantly offered drinks by all the staff.

A big thank you has to go to the Thomas Cook Wedding Co-Ordinator Steven. He made sure our wedding day went smoothly, and took control of everything. The flowers, car, venue, cake, photographer, videographer and weather he sorted out was perfect and we both can%26#39;t thank him enough. He is a really decent guy who is easy to get on with. If you have him for your wedding then you will be fine! We got married in Peyia Town Hall which was beautiful and the pictures there were out of this world. Certainly the nicest town hall to get married at.

A big thank you also to the Thomas Cook Rep Craig who also made sure we had everything we needed. Again he couldn%26#39;t do enough for us and both of them are a credit to Thomas Cook.

We were not impressed with Pahos Airport on our return. Very busy, very cramped and we were delayed by 2 hours. The sooner they get the new airport finished the better! 5 1/2 years later they are still building it.

Our wedding day was both the happiest and best day of our lives, and our dream wedding wouldn%26#39;t have become a reality without everyone%26#39;s help at Thomas Cook. If we did it all again we wouldn%26#39;t change one thing.

If you are thinking of getting married in Pahos then do it. Much better and much cheaper. We will cherish the memories for the rest of our lives.

If anyone has any questions, the don%26#39;t hessitate to contact us.

|||

Congratulations - it sounds like it was a truly memorable day and a lovely holiday. I wish you all the best for the future.

|||

Hi Yorkshire - sounds like you had a fabulous time - apart from the journey home. Do you remember me replying to you a couple of weeks ago about TC flights? Well, we never made that Manchester flight due to a family bereavement and reading your review made me so jealous, but always next year.

Congratulationsand best wishes for a long and happy marriage.

|||

Congratulations on your marriage.

The work on the airport only started this year, it has been going through planning and tender stage till this point. As you say it is long over due, Paphos International Airport indeed!!!

Sue

|||

Congratulations to you both!!! Im off to Paphos is September, cant wait!! Me and my partner got engaged last year and im trying to talk my partner round to the two of us just going away to get married but he wants a wedding back home with all the family. Hopefully when he sees paphos he might change his mind!!!

Take Care xx

|||

Sorry to hear about your bereavement Saintscully, how cruel life is at times. Hopefully you will get back to Paphos again soon.

I would highly reccommend getting married in Paphos as it is a fraction of the cost and you get a much better wedding in my oppinion.

Cyprus is such a beautiful island, and it certainly opened my eyes as a holiday destination. We can%26#39;t wait to go back there, and Paphos will always be close to our hearts due to us getting married there.

I would go back again later this year, but we have our honeymoon in the Maldives in October and are then planning to go to Florida next year. Hopefully 2009 we will head back, as it is an amazing place.

Thanks for all the kind comments, like I mentioned if anyone wants any questions answering then just let me know or post it on this thread and I will answer them the best I can!

|||

Congratulations! We got married in Paphos (I think I might have told you this before!) and 10 years later we still agree it was the best day we could have wished for. Wouldn%26#39;t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Couldn%26#39;t agree more about the Airport! We%26#39;ve been told to try and fly any day except Wednesday, as that%26#39;s the worst day.

Yep - 10 years on the memories are still fabulous!!
