We are planning to spend two weeks in Cyprus in September/October. I have never been there and would appreciate some advice as to where to stay. My husband wants a long sandy beach and to chill for two weeks ... I would like to be able to take the odd day trip to see a bit of %26#39;culture%26#39; as I would get bored sitting on a beach for two weeks! We are in our fifties and want a really good, quiet 4 or 5 star hotel within reach of local restaurants etc. Somewhere with a bit of character rather than a modern tower block or huge complex.Any ideas? Are the beaches better in the North or the South? His ideal would be a beach where he could walk for miles and a Hotel which is right on that beach.
Does such a place exist in Cyprus?

I%26#39;ve only ever visited the South so can%26#39;t comment on the North although I have been on day visits across the border. The best beach is at Famagusta but is still unaccessible. However, if you stop at Nissi Bay, 30 mins walk from the centre of Ayia Napa you should find a hotel that suits. Nissi Beach is the largest. All the beaches are bays but there is a coastal path you can walk that links them. You can start from Macronnissos Beach and walk long Landa Beach, past the small bay at Yianoulla along to Nissi Beach. Then on to Sandy Bay and past the beach behind the Electra Village. The beaches in the West (Paphos) are not sandy. Although there are a lot of ruins to see. However, there is still culture to soak up at the Ayia Napa side of the Island and excursions into the North are easy. It doesn%26#39;t take long to get around by car and the driving is identical to UK. 4-5 star within easy reach of bars I would recommend Aeneas, Adams Beach and Nissi Beach all on Nissi Beach.. Lower rating but I have used nigh on 15 times is Tasia Maris Beach Hotel, with Sandy Bay beach right behind. This is a Thomson Gold 3+T so no children and only 20 mins walk to the centre. Plenty of restaurants and bars on the doorstep. If you want a hotel with a bit of character and not tower block (there aren%26#39;t any tower blocks) I would suggest the Nissi Park. This is across the road Nissi Beach again. The reason there aren%26#39;t any tower blocks is because the tower blocks at Famagusta shaded the beach from mid afternoon so they disallowed the building of tall hotels after the division of the island. Hope it helps

Hi Helen, having been to both the East side and the West side I could recommend either!!
I also like to be beach side and enjoy walking to get away for an hour or two and found that both Protaras in the east and Paphos in the west ideal. In Protaras have a look at the Capo Bay and the Sunrise Beach hotels, both are on the beach and are excellent hotels. They also work with an allocated sun bed for your stay which means you don%26#39;t have to get up at a stupid time to bag a bed. They are also in the middle of the main strip with all the restaurants and bars on your doorstep. From here you can do numerous organised trips like a journey into the Troudos mountains or visit Nicosia or go to the Limassol area where you%26#39;ll find Aphrodite%26#39;s rock and the Currium Theatre(sp?).
In Paphos there is the main road which runs along the coast into the harbour which has numerous good 4 and 5 star hotels all along it.The beaches aren%26#39;t that great but the hotels all have there own area of beach in which you can cool off in but they are definately not like Protaras, never the less they are ideal for lying on for a sea breeze to cool down. There are several restaurants along this road heading into the harbour and too many to mention once you are in the harbour.Paphos is much bigger and busier than Protaras but away from the harbour it%26#39;s quieter and more laid back.
Difficult decision but there is more to see and do in Paphos but the beach in Protaras makes up for it.

Hi Helen!
I would suggest splitting your holiday to the 2 far sides of Cyprus -have the best of both worlds. I am a fan of the Paphos area as it combines great hotels with alot of culture and things to do. I must admit though that the BEST beaches are on the other side of the island. I would spend a week in Paphos, do alot of site-seeing, travelling into the mountains, take a boat trip to Akamas and then also spend a week in Protaras.
How does that sound?

Thanks Dav and Sweetie! You have both given me a lot to think about. Very helpful comments. Protaras looks perfect and may well consider Paphos as well. Thanks a lot for your help!
