Why has Cyprus become so EXPENSIVE for visitors..

I have a couple of houses in a small Cypriot village in the mountains.We are very lucky as we have been more or less accepted by the locals.We tend to visit twice a year for 3-4 weeks at a time.we have a twelve year old daughter who still take an interest in the village and the locals and has picked up some Greek.

We however,are dissapionted to see what is happening nearer the beach and the tourist areas.The prices have gone up beyond reason.The local population pay only half of what the tourist pays.

A Cypriot sitting in the same restaurant as a tourist will only pay a fraction of what is listed on the menu.We shop and use are village coffee shop (bar) and pay less than half of what is charged 30 miles away.

No wonder the island is suffering at the moment.Maybe if we all started to complain a little more we might be treated the same.Believe me the Cypriots complain and get exactly what they want.It is amazing what you can pick up in a restaurant,bar supermarket,when you can understand the language.Speak the language and their view of you changes beyond recognition....

The same applies in Northern Cyprus too leica. My friend relocated there a couple of years ago and there is a price for locals and a price for tourists. When she goes in any shop she asks what the price is for residents and invariably it is lower than the price on the ticket.

|||

Sorry for what you are writing leica, but all pay the same in restaurants. There is the menu and the prices are listed and also a receipt is given.

As for the difference in prices between the village and the waterfront, did you count in the difference in the rent each proprietor pays???

You are making the Cypriots as being a bunch of thieves which is not the case. If you go to any supermarket the prices are listed and most of them are using the bar codes, cannot imagine anyone going through the hassle of putting 2 bar codes for each item, just tor ripoff the unawares...

Cyprus is an EU country paying good salaries to all employees unlike some in the area that are paying slave wages to people. It is not a cheap country anymore, but no more than some...

|||

So now we%26#39;re saying the Lake District isn%26#39;t a rip off.

Yes it is! All tourist attractions are!

Go to the villages and you pay less.

|||

Why do you wish to encourage us to complaint? If you do not like Cyprus do not go back! We love it........ It is like heaven on earth.

We just returned from a trip back to London. What you mention for Cyprus we faced it in London. The prices every time we travel there go up.

What you say about the locals pay a fraction in a restaurant it is not truth. Each restaurant has a price list and everybody pay what is on this price list.

Instaed of complaining it is better to stay back home with the gloomy weather and yr miserable attitute

By the way readers,we Cypriots get into the water park in Limassol half price.This applies to English Cypriots as well as locals.Tourists pay full price...Please explain that.

|||

when water park in limassol has a low season they send a special offer to all tour operators in order to promote it to all their clients with no exception.

My staff (travel agents) get in free . It does not mean that cypriots get in free and foreigners pay

Get serious people

|||

I never said we get in free.It is half price for Cypriots.

So is the time travel in Limassol.

I have stood in those queues on many occassion sand listened to tourist argueing about the price for locals and tourists.It is still the same.Now they are letting ex pats in half price if they bring proof of living in Cyprus ie:green card.The offer is not available to British forces who are deemed not to be residents.

This offer runs throughout the year even in peak season.

Come on now let%26#39;s get real....

|||

Re: rent.Yes I counted that.My family live in Cyprus my sister has businesses in Cyprus.I have Cypriot friends who have retail property on the sea front.The mark up on the vast majority of goods is over 100%.

I never said all Cypriots are thieves,alot more of these ventures are now owned by foreign nationals.

I do however get angry when I see 1 nescaffe at £1.10 (Cyprus) when the satchet of coffee costs less than 2cents or paying £1.55 for a whiskey when a litre bottle costs £4.80.

We do not have a mark up like that here....

|||

I am not miserable,but realitic.Since being brought up in Cyprus and supporting it%26#39;s economy for over forty years I am entitled to my views.

I have property there have given local men and women jobs,put money in your banks.My parents live in Cyprus my sister has businesses in Cyprus.We as a family have supported Cyprus for a long time.Now Cyprus is in the EU all EU nationals have the same rights as Cypriots,freedom of speech is one of them.

Lets start treating people the same and loose this old fashioned independant attitude.

i was advised by a Cypriot that income tax went fromo about 12% to 25% so that the goverment can take this extra cash and save up to rebuilt Famagusta.Do you think this is true??
