Hi Everyone:
I wanted to solicit some advice from locals / long term residents on a couple of things.
I am in the midst of negotiating salary / benefits for a job based in Nicosia.
While I have done some research on taxation etc etc, I would like to get some points of view regarding what kind of salary would be fair to live a comfortable (not extravagant) day to day life in Nicosia while being able to put away a few pounds at the end of every month.
I am someone that appreciates a relatively quiet life but have a weak spot for good food. As my job would require frequent international travel, I foresee being a bit of a home body when back in Nicosia and not out on the town every night of the week.
BTW, while I find lots of info on apartments in the more touristy areas of Cyprus, I am not having alot of luck on Nicosia itself - hope that%26#39;s not a sign of the relatively limited options.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. With any luck, a month or two I will buy the first round of drinks.
Cheers
JW

Hi there,
I will try to answer being a local in Nicosia.
If i am not mistaken non-Cypriots are not paying income tax for the first 3 years of their employment in Cyprus.
You might though have to pay 6.5% national insurance contribution which will automatically being deducted from your salary by your employer.
I cannot say how much you will need as wage but around 1000 Cyprus pounds per month (equivalent to 1200 GBP or 1710 EURO or 2400 USD) will be more than enough.
Renting an appartment in Nicosia could cost around 300-400 pounds monthly depending on the location and the number of bedrooms. Air-conditioning is a must in the summer months and it should be your first priority in an apparment.
Moreover the public transport system in Nicosia is very poor so you should seak for a place to live near to your work, unless you prefer to buy a car.
In Cyprus we drive on the left hand side just like in England.
As far as food is concern you will love Cyprus.
Cyprus cuisine has a lot of excellent recipes and there a lot of good restaurants in Nicosia.
There are also many other choices such as French, Italian, Chinese and Japanese restaurants.
Dinner will cost between 10-50 pounds in one of the above restaurants excluding drinks.
Finally note that Nicosia does not have an airport and you will have to get a flight to Larnaca (51km from Nicosia, 30 minutes by car or taxi which will cost around 30-40 pounds).
